Physical Education Units for November - February 09-10

Physical Education Units for Nov. through Feb. at Doherty Middle School


Nov 4, 5, 6 Speedball Mix of Soccer & Basketball Four fields, eight students on each team.

Speedball combines soccer and football skills. Students will have the option of running three steps or dribbling/bouncing the ball three times and then passing to a teammate. To score you must throw the ball over a sideline to a teammate. If the ball hits the ground you must use only your feet in a soccer style move to lift or kick it up to a teammate.

Nov. 9-13 Circuit Training for fitness


Circuit training consists of many stations (4-12) that have students perform a specific exercise with or without equipment to develop every muscle group or fitness component. The stations would last for 30 seconds – 1 minute. Groups of 3-6 students would rotate together through the stations. Music will be playing in the background.

Nov. 18-24 Turkey Game


Famous Andover Public Schools obstacle course invented by retired P.E. Teacher Jack Gleason. Nerf balls are propelled at “student-turkeys” as they race from the pen to freedom.


Nov. 30-Dec 21 Basketball and Fitness Room Introduction
Mr. Capodilupo will teach a four week unit in basketball and Ms. Corey will introduce Fitness Programs to students.

Basketball skills taught will be dribbling, passing, shooting, position responsibilities, four on four games and the unit will conclude with the Hoops for Heart American Heart Association fundraiser. Fund raising is optional for all students. Last year Doherty Middle School raised $2,400! Contests will include foul shooting, three point shot, knockout and twenty-one.

Personal Fitness programs will teach students how to develop their own workout routine to build a physically fit body to enable them to succeed spritually, mentally and physically for many decades. Students will learn how to develop cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and proper nutrition habits. Students will learn about anatomy and physiology. Ms. Corey and Mr. Capodilupo will both give a post test of ten questions during the last class.

Gymnastics January 4 - January 22

This elective coed physical education unit will introduce students to floor exercise, team floor exercise routines with four to six classmates, vaulting, balance beam, springboard skills and rope climbing skills. At the end of the three week unit students will perform a video-taped demonstration of their skills in a group performance.
